Now don’t get all crazy on me. I’m not insinuating that Ubuntu isn’t Linux nor am I saying it is the only distro out there that is worth a look. With that said, it does seem that Ubuntu is becoming a name that may become as recognizable as Linux it self. This is definitely a good thing for Ubuntu but may end up being a confusing and frustrating issue for Linux users. While it’s clear that OS X is built on Unix no one calls OS X Unix. Will Ubuntu end up with the same fate? Will Ubuntu be seen as it’s own OS all together rather than a Linux based system to those that use it?
Ubuntu has really taken the Linux scene by storm. I myself used to be an OpenSuse Linux user. I used Windows the majority of the time while using Suse. I barely use Windows anymore. While it’s clear that Linux my never become a household name there is no reason Ubuntu cannot do that. For Linux, Ubuntu can be what OS X has become for Unix. The popularity of Ubuntu will only further promote widespread use of Linux. It’s a win-win.
While some Linux users may be frustrated by the popularity of Ubuntu because of the confusion it represents, they shouldn’t be. I feel the best case scenario would be for Ubuntu to begin to produce it’s own hardware. While I don’t know what it would take to complete such an endeavor it is a step that would be an incredible leap for Linux. Apple is successful mainly because of the great hardware that they create. They are able to keep their users happy because of their solid OS. With hardware to match the Ubuntu core you would be presented with a real contender. Any multi-millionaires want to fund such an operation?
Ubuntu is the one linux distro that really could become bigger (in name) than Linux. While you can argue the pros and cons of such a result it is something that we will have to wait for. Ubuntu is a successful version of Linux that has come a long way. With great support and reliable updates it’s one distro that will be here for a long time. While Ubuntu continues to develop cutting edge software that continues to convert Windows users you will see more interest in Linux altogether. Maybe I’m dreaming, maybe I’m delirious or maybe I’m just a strong believer is Ubuntu. I mean, I am an Ubuntuist after all am I not?
